The Council for Higher Education Accreditation Welcomes New President Nasser H. Paydar, Ph.D.
The Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) is pleased to announce that Nasser H. Paydar, Ph.D., has officially begun his tenure as the organization’s third President. With a distinguished career in higher education leadership spanning more than 36 years, Dr. Paydar brings visionary leadership, a deep commitment to CHEA’s mission, and a longstanding dedication to innovation and excellence in postsecondary education.
“I am honored to join CHEA and to carry forward its extraordinary mission—serving our members, students, and society by advocating for the value and independence of higher education accreditation,” said Dr. Paydar. “This is a pivotal moment for accreditation, and I look forward to listening, learning, and working closely with our institutions, Board, accreditors, and talented staff to build on the strong foundation that has been laid.”
Dr. Paydar assumes leadership of CHEA at a time of significant challenges and opportunities in higher education. His experience and dedication will help advance our shared values of academic freedom, institutional autonomy, and quality assurance,” said CHEA Board Chair F. Javier Cevallos. He continued, “As we welcome this new chapter, we also extend our deep appreciation to outgoing CHEA President Cynthia Jackson Hammond, Ed.D., for her outstanding leadership over the past five years.”
As CHEA celebrates this exciting next chapter, we also extend our deep appreciation to retiring CHEA President Cynthia Jackson Hammond, Ed.D., who has led CHEA for the past five years. Dr. Jackson Hammond stated, “The one thing that remains constant is that institutions and CHEA accreditation organizations are committed to student success, and that the demonstration of standards of quality assurance matters.” Under her guidance, CHEA achieved key policy wins, developed impactful programs, expanded partnerships, and recognized its first international accreditation organization. Dr. Jackson Hammond leaves behind a legacy of service, integrity, and excellence that will continue to inspire us.
“I am especially grateful to Dr. Jackson Hammond for her commitment to CHEA,” added Dr. Paydar. “I am fortunate to inherit a dedicated team, a strong community of supporters, and a clear sense of purpose. It’s a joy and privilege to begin this journey.”
