Publication Number 115 December 16, 2024

Representative Tim Walberg (R-MI) has been selected by the U.S. House Republican Steering Committee to chair the House Committee on Education and the Workforce for the 119th Congress. Congressman Walberg has served 16 years on the Committee. He was selected over Representative Burgess Owens (R-UT). This selection will be voted on in the new U.S. Congress which is usually a formality.

Walberg said in a news release about his appointment, “We have a unique opportunity to make substantive reforms to empower parents, incentivize workforce training, improve government efficiency, and unburden American innovators and job creators. Freedom, opportunity, and fairness will guide our work ….”

In an interview with Politico, Rep. Walberg said he wants to bolster school choice, make college more affordable, boost apprenticeships and internships, pass a bipartisan short-term Pell Grant bill for workforce training programs, and reauthorize the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act.

Members of the Committee have not yet been named, and therefore, it is not known who the Sub-committee chairs will be, including the chair of the higher education subcommittee.

CHEA will continue to provide regular updates as additional developments are announced.
