Biden Admin Seeks Dismissal of College Accreditation Lawsuit in Florida (Tampa Free Press, May 4, 2024) A federal judge will hear arguments Monday on the Biden administration’s request to dismiss a lawsuit filed by Florida challenging the constitutionality of an accreditation system for colleges and universities. Attorneys for the U.S. Department of Education said the federal government relies on accrediting agencies to help ensure that colleges and universities meet standards.

Accreditor Taking Action against Wells College after Unannounced and Unplanned Closure (CNY Central, May 3, 2024) The Middle States Commission on Higher Education (MSCHE) is now taking action after Wells College failed to properly notify them of its closure plans. MSCHE is ordering Wells College to complete a monitoring report by May 13, "demonstrating evidence that the institution has achieved and can sustain ongoing accreditation compliance." A teach-out plan is also due on the same day.

Louisiana Governor Could Hire University System Presidents Under Proposal (Louisiana Illuminator, May 1, 2024) The Bill raises concerns about university accreditation. The Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges, the accrediting body for Louisiana universities, requires that the governing boards for its accredited institutions are free from undue external influence. Giving the governor additional authority over higher education governing boards could violate that.

It is the process an institution goes through to ensure its quality of education. Schools must go through this process every ten years to maintain accreditation.
