Rise in Intergovernmental Involvement in HE (University World News, February 3, 2018) “The United States-based Council for Higher Education Accreditation’s International Quality Group (CIQG) sought to unpack some of the key factors and players in international quality assurance and accreditation during its annual gathering last week in Washington.”

New UGC Rules Permit Third-Party Agencies to Accredit Higher Education Institutes (The Indian Express, January 26, 2018) “Agencies other than the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) and the National Board of Accreditation (NBA) will soon be able to evaluate higher education institutions as the University Grants Commission (UGC) has passed a new regulation permitting their entry.”

DHET Embarks on a Countrywide Private Colleges Inspection to Enforce Compliance (Yiba, January 26, 2018) “All private higher education institutions are governed by the Higher Education Act, 1997 and the Continuing Education and Training Colleges Act, 2006. The purpose of the legislations is to ensure that institutions operate within the law, have the necessary resources, capacity and expertise to offer acceptable standards of higher education qualifications that are aligned to the National Qualifications Framework.”

Quality Assurance Mechanism of HEC (Daily Times, January 22, 2018) “The echo of quality assurance in Higher Education of Pakistan was started in 2005 when Quality Assurance Agency (QAA) was established under the umbrella of the Higher Education Commission (HEC) to properly implement the quality assurance mechanism in the Higher Education Institutes.”

Divide Between Onshore and Offshore Campuses Blurring (University World News, January 18, 2018) “[Carolyn] Campbell [of the Observatory on Borderless Higher Education] predicted that quality assurance would rise up the agenda for universities in the global higher education market with more focus on performance and outcomes rather than procedures and processes.”

HEAC Cancels Jordan Classification of Universities (VietnamNet, January 3, 2018) “Independence must be the optimal principle of accreditation centers. And the centers must be put under state management and supervision to be sure they strictly observe the required procedures in accrediting schools.”

Oman Gives Top Priority to Academic Institutions (Times of Oman, January 16, 2018) “The Sultanate has adopted an approach for the sustainable development of higher education institutions. They are required to have academic affiliation with elite foreign universities and this affiliation should include the study programmes and quality assurance.”
