Education Department Drafts Standards for Accreditors (Inside Higher Ed, April 6, 2016) “The Obama administration is proposing new standards that govern how and when college accreditors have to alert the U.S. Department of Education about troubled institutions under the accreditors’ purview.”

New Jersey University Was Fake, But Visa Fraud Arrests Are Real (New York Times, April 5, 2016) “The [University of Northern New Jersey] was a fake, set up by the Homeland Security Department as part of a sting operation to ensnare criminals involved in student visa fraud.”

Human Rights Warning (Inside Higher Ed/Times Higher Education, April 7, 2016) “Gearoid O. Cuinn and Sigrun Skogly of Lancaster University Law School, in Britain, argue that institutions and accreditation agencies could potentially face legal challenges in their home countries if they do not use the course certification process to try to uphold human rights overseas.”

Tribal: Don’t Fear Private Sector Role in Quality Assurance (Times Higher Education, April 6, 2016) “Jon Baldwin, managing director of market development at Tribal Group, an education support services firm, told Times Higher Education that private sector involvement in areas such as quality assurance is the “logical next step” following the growth of private colleges.”  

Cabinet Approves University Accreditation Council Law (University World News, April 2, 2016) “The Bangladesh government last week approved in principle the draft of ‘The Accreditation Council Law, 2016,’ with a view to ensuring standards of higher education in the country.”
