(Washington, DC) – The Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) today issued a revised Recognition Policy and Procedures “that is responsive to enhanced expectations for accountability while continuing CHEA’s longstanding support for peer/professional review and self-regulation through accreditation,” according to CHEA President Judith Eaton.
The revised Recognition Policy and Procedures addresses increased transparency regarding the results of accreditation reviews, adds to the scrutiny of the international activity of U.S. accreditors and establishes an expectation that accreditors will provide information to the public about degree mills and accreditation mills.
“Strong CHEA recognition is part of a strong accreditation enterprise for the higher education community,” Eaton noted. “This revised policy will assist institutions and accreditors as they work to assure accountability as part of a credible and reliable system of self-regulation.”
The Recognition Policy and Procedures contains the standards and processes CHEA uses to review accrediting organizations for quality and effectiveness. Currently, CHEA recognizes 60 regional, national career-related, national faith-related and programmatic accrediting organizations.

CHEA began work on revisions to the policy in March 2010. CHEA solicited and received comments and hosted open meetings and conference calls with colleges and universities, accrediting organizations, higher education associations and the public. The revised policy was then reviewed and approved by the CHEA Board of Directors.
