Dr. Eaton’s Testimony
CHEA Reauthorization Agenda
On February 26, 2004, the U S Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions (HELP) Committee held a hearing on accreditation and reauthorization of the Higher Education Act (HEA). Four witnesses provided prepared statements and summarized their main points before the Committee. A summary of the hearing is contained in CHEA’s HEA Update #7 and a more complete report on the hearing is also on the CHEA Website in pdf form.
On March 10, 2004, at the suggestion of the committee, CHEA submitted written testimony. This testimony outlines CHEA’s positions on accreditation and the reauthorization and includes comments on the statements of the witnesses and the Senators. It also responds directly to several questions asked by individual Committee members and offers to work with them as the legislation develops further. It will be reviewed by the Committee staff and included in the formal, printed record of the hearing.
Submitting post-hearing testimony enables us to focus on issues already on the public record, especially those that Senators have identified through their statements and questions as their own interests. Our March 10 document includes a policy statement from CHEA on each of the significant issues raised at the hearing. It forms the basis for our ongoing work with the Committee.
